Your home and office reveal your personality, your talents and your blocks. What is going on inside of us is out on display in the places that we live and work. You can gain more insight looking at a persons stuff than talking to them for a month.
An average office says so much. The picture to the right shows a typical home office; a desk, books, some clutter. Steve's office shows him to be an IT guy or at least strongly interested in computers (there are a lot of big computer books), interested in basketball (the basketball toy on the shelf), travel and things going on in the world (the globe). He's most likely in a relationship (a mug with 'love' on it with a small stuffed bear in the mug). He's older and though computer savvy he doesn't entirely trust it with his finances (envelopes of receipts on his desk). And he's left handed. All this from one photograph.
Who is your bedroom for?
Terry had three children, all the furry, four-legged kind and they had every possible access to every part of the bedroom. There was a carpeted cat climber by the window from which the cats could leap to the dresser (which had to be kept clear or else the cats would clear it, several bottles of expense perfume had already been sacrificed) and then precariously to the top of the bookcase. There were a set a mini stairs by the bed for the little dog and an outline of his black fur on her white duvet. A cat box in the bathroom and probably $800 worth of cat toys scattered around the room making perfect obstacles when Terry had to get up in the middle of the night to use the toilet. And when Terry went to bed at night she squeezed in between her four-legged family members. She couldn't even allow herself to roll over for fear of crushing one, especially one with claws that could fight back.
When your bedroom is set up for the comfort of others (even pets) over yourself you are indicating that you are unwilling to put yourself first. And you will do this in many aspects of your life. We love our pets (I really love my pets) but they don't pay the mortgage. And when you don't put your needs first you are in danger of having relationships with people that are completely one-sided. Or you avoid relationships because they are so depleting.
Is your dining room a photo album?
It was in Clair's dining room that I met the family, 62 pictures of relatives going back to Ellis Island. Grandma's and great grandma's, cousins and second cousins, everyone had a frame and a place on the wall. The person who keeps a lot of family pictures in their dining room is one who values family and wants to keep them close. They feel they are supported by their family (whether they are or not) and they will tend to stick with family patterns, the good ones and the bad ones.
Is your living space comfortable to others or just you?
You probably feel comfortable in your living room or living space because there are a lot of things people can get comfortable with. We're comfortable with what's familiar, even when things are ill-fitting, misaligned or even painful. My client Bob lives in a nice studio apartment, convenient to his work and all of his favorite hangouts. But his bed/sofa was a prewar futon and I don't mean the Gulf War. The cotton in this thing had been so compacted over years of use it was more like a sculpture than a bed. And despite his protests that it was comfortable (and what could be more comfortable than a slab of concrete that retains an imprint of your body) his friends preferred sitting on wooden dining chairs or the floor when they visited.
Every morning he awoke tired and irritated. Hanging on to a relic of a sofa (or a bed) indicates a person who is clinging to the past and needs to loosen their grip if they want their life to improve. It can indicate that they don't want others in their space or their life. It can also reveal a lack of life direction when it comes to their relationships with others. It's like they want time to stop progressing forward.
